Is creativity limited, and how are we creative?

In an era increasingly dominated by algorithmic generation, cultural remakes, and historical attempts to reduce narrative structure to a finite set of plot permutations, modern thought faces a central existential question: Is human creativity a closed, finite system? This paper challenges the assumption that imagination is merely combinatorial shuffling. Instead, it introduces a three-tiered paradigm of creative manifestation: Baseline Consensus (the established, agreed-upon rules of reality), Probability Space (the intermediate threshold where cultural, technological, and scientific preconditions mature into a moment "pregnant with possibility"), and Potential Space (the unmanifested cosmic frontier beyond current physical geometry and consensus laws).

By examining the internal engine of human agency—specifically forward-looking neurological architecture, adult hippocampal neurogenesis, the Reticular Activating System (RAS), the transformative power of self-identity, and the semiotic mechanics of language—this paper demonstrates how individual intent acts as the essential catalyst that collapses probability into physical reality. Furthermore, it positions Artificial Intelligence not as a replacement for human creative capacity, but as a reflective mirror of collective recorded knowledge that accelerates human reasoning. Ultimately, this framework redefines creativity not as an artistic luxury, but as the primary evolutionary mechanism through which conscious intent extends the boundaries of existence itself.

Introduction

Copyright protection for creative works offers an interesting perspective on what creativity is: your creative expression can be copyrighted. If it was written by someone else or created by AI, it cannot be. However, you can take a document, remove the sentences or paragraphs written by AI, and copyright what remains.

This skirts the entire foundational idea of what creativity is: original ideas. Unfortunately, raw ideas have never been eligible for copyright protection. They aren't recognized legally as creative expressions, yet they are the very essence of creativity. Your core creativity cannot be copyrighted—only the specific, tangible expression of it can be.

In this paper, we explore whether creativity is truly limited, examine the impact of AI on human imagination, and outline how we can expand our creative capacity.

Is Creativity Limited?

Long before the 1970s, it was widely believed that there were a strictly limited number of plots available for books, plays, and screenplays. Here are a few prominent figures who perpetuated that concept throughout history:

While some commentators discuss three primary plot structures, the most common contemporary assumption remains Booker’s seven basic plots[3]:

  1. Overcoming the Monster
  2. Rags to Riches
  3. The Quest
  4. Voyage and Return
  5. Comedy
  6. Tragedy (which rarely ends well for the character or the writer’s prosperity)
  7. Rebirth

In most stories, elements of several or all of these exist alongside romance, intrigue, mystery, suspense, rich settings, dynamic characters, and escalating stakes. The illusion is that recombining these story elements imposes a finite mathematical limit. This makes creativity appear closed—like a twenty-year-old who believes they have experienced everything the world has to offer and asks, “Is that all there is?”

In reality, familiar plot structures serve a purpose: they are reassuring, and audiences love them. But we can construct nearly infinite narrative variations through character motivations, romantic involvements, suspense, mystery, world-building, escalating stakes, and rich humor.

Plot structures are merely raw ideas. As I've written before, it's how you express the plot in thousands of distinct variations that turns a structure into a story. Uniqueness creates interest; uniqueness is the quest to be conquered. In uniqueness lies true creativity. It is the unique blend that makes concrete strong, facial makeup pop, and music appealing.

Now, AI can generate content effectively and improves daily. Can we push the envelope beyond what AI can do? To answer that, we must look deeper at the nature of creativity.

The Limits of the Known

We often wonder: can we stretch our minds to find something entirely new that no one else has ever conceived? Practically speaking, anytime I've written something I thought was completely unique, I eventually discovered elements of it in someone else's work. When a concept is on your mind, you begin to see it everywhere. For instance, I wrote an intrigue novel featuring a strong female central character alongside a male protagonist—a dynamic that wasn't common at the time. Before I could publish, John le Carré released a novel with a strong female lead. Argh!

Conceiving something genuinely new is a fascinating thought experiment. Abstract thought remains a distinct domain of human creativity. AI touches on abstract reasoning, but only minimally. At its core, creativity involves forming novel connections across disparate fields and using tools like metaphor to generate new perspectives. But in an era dominated by algorithms and endless cultural remakes, are we simply shuffling a finite deck of cards?

Let's conduct a thought experiment to test these creative limits. Generally, creativity recombines existing concepts or uses metaphors to amplify ideas. This suggests a finite region of creative possibility, as there are mathematically limited combinations within the universe of known things.

Experiment Background: In physics, matter is often explored as originating from wave states. Quantum light behavior in the double-slit experiment demonstrates wave-particle duality, remaining uncollapsed until measured or utilized.

Let's Expand: Assume both wave and particle theories are incomplete. Instead, suppose matter exists as various forms of "eichorns" (a made-up term), constructed of energized entropy perceived through reactions to other energized entropy—such as human physical structure and all objects in the universe.

Does this thought experiment cross the boundary of the finite to become something entirely new? Or is it simply using imagination to recombine metaphors and existing physics? In truth, it doesn't transcend what we already know. The very definition of an "eichorn" relies entirely on existing thermodynamic and quantum concepts. Everything we think is rooted in what we already know and what currently exists. So where does that leave creativity?

All Is Not Lost

Combinations of established ideas yield new insights that open fresh paths through the universe. They provide novel expressions that inspire new avenues of thought and research. Furthermore, scientific discovery continuously reveals new findings in physics and biology, proving that creativity is not a completely closed system.

Throughout history, humanly experienced events and paradigm shifts were initially rejected by science because they violated the consensus agreement of their era. While the sun appears to rise and set, it is actually the Earth revolving on its axis. In the 1600s, church authorities feared that René Descartes' practice of radical doubt would inadvertently undermine faith and institutional authority, leading to his works being placed on the Index of Forbidden Books[7]. We observe similar social dynamics today as culture evolves through cycles of development.

Creative breakthroughs occur not by defending rigid rules, but by breaking them under the weight of persistent outlier observations—or through a process of deconstruction that trims away accreted traditions like barnacles sloughing off a hull when clearer understanding prevails.

For example, when writing about theology, rather than using the traditional phrase “Kingdom of God,” I often use “Domain of God”. This term resonates better with modern audiences. I describe this as a virtual domain of the spirit, bringing in the term “virtual” from computer science as a contemporary metaphor. I describe God as being within us—a “chip off the old block”—which simplifies understanding communication through meditation. "Virtual" does not imply unreal; it describes a non-spatial dimension where conscious spirits dwell in harmony with God.

Historical formulations of the Trinity often left people wondering how three could be one. Yet these are expressions of the Divine. Substance lies in how we choose to experience what represents God. In this sense, human consciousness helps realize the ways we choose to experience reality. That, certainly, is creativity at work.

The Threshold of Manifestation (Probability Space)

In my work, I utilize two core concepts: Probability Space and Potential Space. Probability Space is the domain of everyday creativity. Our brains are open systems; processing new experiences forms new neural pathways. If our minds were closed, we would be incapable of learning. Those who close their minds to new ideas stagnate. It is within an open mind that Probability Space takes root when conditions mature.

Rather than strictly defining Probability Space, I prefer to describe it—definition creates boundaries, whereas new concepts thrive with room for expansion. I describe Probability Space as becoming aware of an idea whose time has come. It represents the intermediate zone where all prerequisite tools, cultural conditions, and technical or scientific foundations have fully matured.

We can express this state as a moment "pregnant with possibility". History is full of simultaneous inventions—such as calculus, the telephone, the automobile, and radio transmission. The necessary conditions were established by preceding innovators who created a fertile environment. All that remained was a catalyst of creative thought and human intent.

Human need generates intent. We naturally seek to solve problems and eliminate suffering, hardship, and tedious labor. Intent seizes new technological developments and applies them directly to human needs. In this manner, recombination generates evolutionary momentum that pushes toward a ripe threshold, and there it emerges.

The Catalytic Spark: Intent and Ingenuity

Probability Space does not collapse into physical reality automatically. People rarely develop major breakthroughs purely at random. Reality is brought into being through recognized human need, focused intent, decision, and creative action. While commercial business relies heavily on profit motives, that dimension lies outside our primary scope here.

Pioneers recognize when a moment is ripe while the majority remain fixated on the old. While the public listened to 78 RPM records, innovators leveraged emerging technologies to develop 33 RPM albums, magnetic tape, cassette tapes, vinyl, MP3s, and digital streaming. Each step evolved from real needs and technical advancements that prompted creators to explore new frontiers.

The Internal Engine (Psychology, Identity, and the Brain)

Psychological consensus indicates that human personality is shaped by both nature and nurture. We inherit core traits, while our environment and interpersonal relationships help mold our ongoing character. We are built for expansion.

While some individuals remain habituated in past patterns, the human brain is neurologically forward-looking. I recall a hypnosis experiment where subjects were instructed to suggest that "there is no future"; subsequently, most subjects became unresponsive to further prompts. While presence and mindfulness are valuable, human consciousness inherently plans for the future.

Our open neurological structure facilitates this future orientation. Neuroplasticity—the brain's capacity to grow, adapt, and reorganize neural connections throughout life—allows nerve cells to adjust in response to new learning and experiences. Furthermore, while it was long believed that adult brains do not produce new neurons (nerve cells), modern research in adult hippocampal neurogenesis demonstrates that the human brain generates roughly 700 new neurons every day in the hippocampus—a key region for memory formation and learning[8]. Memory is expansive and oriented toward future learning.

At the same time, conscious decisions alter our perceptual filters via the Reticular Activating System (RAS). The RAS filters environmental data based on our expectations, allowing the mind to perceive opportunities in Probability Space that were previously invisible.

Identity is crucial to creative execution. Identity encompasses the beliefs, traits, roles, and expressions that define an individual—the steady sense of self shaped over time by memories and group belonging.

An identity anchored strictly in the past becomes a trap. We operate as who we believe we are, within practical limits. (I never attended medical school, so I do not possess a physician's skills—not even 1%). However, we evolve into what we continuously think through sustained focus. but if our self-concept remains closed to new possibilities, we remain anchored in past results.

By conceptualizing a new identity and working toward it, we shift our internal emotional state and alignment in ways necessary to pull an idea across the threshold into physical reality. We create ourselves, establishing a self-concept that resonates with environmental opportunities. Identity compels self-creation and serves as the nexus between what is and what can be.

The Role of Language

Our capacity for complex thought is directly bound to language. A word acts as a signifier representing an idea. No two individuals hold the exact same mental representation of an idea; we share a functional consensus with personal variations. A word (signifier) is a symbol pointing to a concept (signified), but our mental pictures remain unique and varied.

If we cannot conceptualize something in symbolic terms—holding it in our minds to analyze or manipulate—we cannot utilize it effectively. For practical purposes, it remains inaccessible. Ancient traditions held that humans speak things into existence—a concept akin to modern ideas of manifestation. If we lack terminology for a concept, our reality remains devoid of it. When we learn terminology for a new idea, our understanding expands to encompass new pursuits and meaning. Language is an essential tool for human creativity. This is why I insist on never patronizing readers by restricting vocabulary to a seventh-grade reading level. We should use precise language to represent complex ideas and clearly explain what the terms mean. This elevates people's thinking rather than diluting our collective capacity to understand and reason.

Using the double-slit experiment as a metaphor, imagine for a moment that you invent a word with a vague meaning. In its unobserved state, it exists in a superposition of possibilities. When someone uses the word, it collapses into a distinct meaning for that individual. When another person uses it in a different field, it assumes an entirely different, distinct meaning. Both meanings are correct. In this way, we use science and metaphors to carve out understanding in new fields.

The Frontier of Reality (Potential Space)

If Probability Space involves recognizing an idea whose time has come within developing boundaries, Potential Space pushes beyond those boundaries.

I developed the concept of Potential Space through observing cosmic expansion. The expanding universe generates new space as energy, matter, and physical laws propagate outward. Outside these physical laws, there isn't an empty void waiting to be filled; space itself is generated by the outward projection of relational rules.

Scientific discovery continuously reveals facets of the physical universe, expanding our mental horizons. Rather than viewing Earth as a flat center of a small cosmos, empirical science revealed vast galactic dimensions. We now analyze quantum entanglement, superposition collapse upon observation, and parallel computational models. Science reveals new possibilities, which we can use as metaphors to understand broader dimensions of life.

Consider redefining cosmic expansion: rather than matter traveling through pre-existing empty space, expansion represents the active projection of relational rules into unmanifested potential. We don't actually move. What if physical movement through space is simply the manipulation of relational rules? What possibilities emerge when we re-examine our assumptions about time, space, and causality?

Creativity Unleashed

Is creativity limited? On the contrary. Science and technology expand our creative horizons. While concerns often arise that technology will supplant human creative instinct, technology actually frees humanity from routine tasks, opening up broader possibilities for sophisticated innovation.

In the creative cycle, human beings act as architects of emerging paradigms. We harvest timely capabilities from Probability Space to bring new manifestations into being, while scientific exploration carves out Potential Space for ongoing discovery.

The creative cycle flows from potential creationsâź¶ Individual Intentâź¶Outlier Observationâź¶Scientific Validationâź¶Expanded Consensus of possibilityâź¶potential creations.

Radical creative leaps permanently expand the sandbox of reality for future generations.

The Role of AI in Creativity

Debates around Artificial Intelligence often swing between utopian promises and apocalyptic warnings. Will AI eat us? Having worked in AI development and used these systems extensively, I see a more pragmatic reality: AI reflects us. AI processes our collective recorded knowledge. For the most part, it does not know what humanity has not yet discovered or documented.

AI performs research, information synthesis, and combinatorial creative tasks. As an assistant, it conducts thorough research when guided by precise human intent. It assists researchers by accelerating data analysis, allowing the scientific method to be executed with greater speed. However, AI operates within symbolic and theoretical models, lacking direct agency in the physical world.

Crucially, AI accelerates human creativity. For example, I input prompts reflecting deep thought into AI to evaluate hypothesis viability, retrieve cross-disciplinary references, and challenge my assumptions. I'm wrong a lot, but you don't get to see it. I'm also right a lot, which you do get to see. Using AI to challenge and refine human thought is an exceptional application. I occasionally use it to distill long reflections into structured outlines, which then sparks additional original insights during my actual writing process. This paper has had considerable addition.

AI does not displace human creativity unless we choose to surrender our agency. Shortcut-seeking exists in every era, but long-term mastery in any endeavor requires genuine understanding and personal engagement. Many students throughout history have found ways to cheat on tests and papers. There have long been industries for writing papers and providing likely test answers. But these same students can find the only way to succeed in business and life is to continue cheating because they didn't master the concepts. Of course there is always the trope, "I never used algebra."

What is essential is mastering how to utilize AI effectively. I work independently to find ways to integrate AI into developmental tools—such as my Decision Matrix, Spiritual Counseling frameworks, and Creative Companion apps for writer asssitance, to find ways they help the writer or engineer without doing the work for them. By embedding the latest structured learning models and reflective prompts, AI serves to challenge human thinking, fostering genuine intellectual growth, creativity, and creative ownership.

The Unbounded Future

The observable universe continues to expand. There appears to be no ultimate boundary to this growth. Perhaps the most vital insight to emerge from this model is the restoration of the ultimate dignity and agency of human imagination. We participate as co-creators in an unfolding reality.

Consider this: our minds can conceptualize the totality of the cosmos. While no single individual holds every detail, we function much like the distributed information in a holographic system. Each individual holds a specific perspective, but collectively, human consciousness reflects the broader network of reality.

Furthermore, while we inhabit a physical domain, we engage with profound intangible dimensions such as love. Love cannot be isolated under a microscope or measured through standard laboratory instruments, yet it remains one of the most transformative forces shaping human existence.

Conclusion: Creativity is neither an artistic luxury nor a mere psychological quirk—it is the literal evolutionary engine through which consciousness expands the boundaries of existence itself.

We are not trapped in a finite sandbox, endlessly shuffling a fixed deck of old ideas. While Probability Space allows us to harvest the ideas whose time has come , it is human intent, identity, and symbolic language that give us the courage to step up to the edge of Potential Space.

AI may reflect and accelerate our collective knowledge , but it is human imagination that projects new relational rules into the unmanifested unknown.

Every time we challenge static assumptions, expand our vocabulary, shift our identity, or embrace a bold new metaphor, we push the wavefront of reality outward. In doing so, we fulfill our ultimate purpose: acting as conscious co-creators in an ever-expanding, unbounded universe.

So I leave you with a compelling question: are dark matter, dark energy, and the relentless expansion of the physical universe fundamentally linked to the ongoing projection of conscious thought and creative intent? Think on it and expand your creative boundaries.
